combining the old with the new

Kate and I both love combining the old with the new. In fact, we joke around and call it “multigenerational design.” You know, many of us have a few cherished pieces from their grandmother or a precious item from our parents. I think these pieces, the history of you, makes a house a home.

The key to incorporating the old with the new is balance. Most folks have a few older (antique) pieces, and their home is predominantly current or contemporary. If that’s the case think 80/20. In other words, sprinkle in those little nods to the past. For me, it’s the other way around. I have lots of antique pieces so I sprinkle contemporary items around the house which gives it visual interest.

A great example is an antique secretary that sits in my guest bedroom. Propped on top are antique books and a sweet little framed poem about mothers which was a gift to my great-grandmother from my grandmother when she was a little girl. (In other words, invaluable to me.) But to give the space a fresh twist, I’ve incorporated a brass task lamp. In the same room, I’ve also added contemporary brass picture frames to  a collection of books and old blue and white vases. The end result…. Unique contrast and visual panache!

So don’t be hesitant. Pull out those precious old items and showcase them. It’s a great way to create a stylish home that feels uniquely YOU!
