decorating with books

Let’s talk books…not only are they great to read, they’re also a decorating must. In fact, books can be an anchor for your overall aesthetic. Why? First and foremost, the reads in your home represent who you are and what you love. On my sofa back table you’ll find a book housing images of John Mellencamp’s painting. (I’ve loved him since he was John Cougar), and my coffee table has books ranging in topics from horses and wine to the great outdoors. Yes, my top three loves!!!! In other words, the books in my home represent me.

However, there are other great reasons to use books in your home that are rooted in design.

Using Books as Risers
I love this little wooden chest in the picture; however, it originally looked completely lost on the table. So I stacked a few books below it to give a sense of height and weight. I’ve used this trick throughout my home elevating lamps, vases, and even a bowl of fruit in my kitchen. Yep, books can be stacked under almost any item. Another big perk to this trick is it provides a more lived in look, which in my opinion, creates a warm sense of home.

Add a Little Color
My home is predominantly gray, navy, and white like the granite, water, and clouds of Tahoe. With large windows around my house, the palette works seamlessly with nature bringing the outside in. Nevertheless, we all need a little pop of color! By adding books around the house it gives tonal energy to your overall decor. Oh and one little tip I learned from designers during my childhood…remove the jacket covers to create bold punches of color. I know this is a little controversial in the book world, but when it comes to adding color in your home, it’s a great trick.

So unpack your old books and get decorating. It’s an easy, fun, and inexpensive way to transform your decor and create a space that feels uniquely you!
